Chris Dittmann Racing (CDR) has signed Irish racing driver Cian Carey for the 2017 F3 Cup championship.
The Tewkesbury-based outfit will prepare and run Carey’s Dallara F311 machine which is powered by a VW engine. In addition to running the car and providing engineering support, Carey will also have access to CDR’s superb driver coaching services, allowing him to benefit from the advice of team principal and 2012 F3 Cup Champion Chris Dittmann and other experts.
Carey, 22, moves to CDR following an enormously successful season in 2016, in which he won the BOSS Ireland single-seater championship, clinching the crown at Mondello Park in September. Carey won five races throughout the year, collecting an additional seven podiums along the way, making him one of the hottest prospects in club single-seater racing, and his signing a coup for CDR.
Carey won plenty of admirers this year by securing the championship in a relatively diminutive Formula Renault 2.0 machine, and he was recently named as the Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year and awarded a 50-thousand Euro prize-fund to reflect that.
Carey now turns his attention to the UK with CDR, behind the wheel of a F3 car – the next step up the ladder of slicks-and-wings machinery.
Carey said: “After winning BOSS Ireland in 2016 in a Formula Renault, winning five races and achieving 12 podiums, I have just won Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year and funding from Sport Ireland worth 50 000€.
“My plan for next year is to be on the pace right away and if at all possible winning races. I feel I have the pace to do so and it will be brilliant with the support from my sponsors and Motorsport Ireland. I’m really excited to work with Chris Dittmann and the guys from CDR and hope we can all push each other on to aim for the Drivers’ and Teams Championships.”
Dittmann added: “Cian impressed in Monoposto, and has been beating cars in Ireland that have far more power than his. It’s a great signing for us, and he’ll be a key part in us trying to reclaim our Teams’ Championship title. Together we should put him in a good position to fight for the Drivers’ Championship.”
